The foliage is dark green and leathery and is one of the plant's most appealing features.  The shy flowers resemble single roses and nod their pretty faces toward the ground. Nasturtiums Tropaeolum majus.  An easy to grow annual, they are great companion plants as well! Nasturtiums help deter aphids, whiteflies, squash bugs, cucumber beetles and other pests. Plant them with tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, cucumbers, and under fruit trees.  Both peppery flowers and leaves are perfect for salads.
